An electric strike replaces the standard strike plate on a door frame and releases the lock latch when it receives power, so you can control a door remotely from a buzzer, keypad, card reader, or intercom without replacing the lock itself. They are the most cost-effective way to add access control to an existing door.
The first decision is fail-secure vs. fail-safe. A fail-secure strike (the most common choice) stays locked during a power outage, which is right for storefronts, offices, and stockrooms. A fail-safe strike unlocks when power is lost and is used where life-safety or fire code requires free egress through the controlled side, such as some stairwell and fire-rated openings. Check your local code or ask us if you're unsure: this single choice is the most common ordering mistake we see.
Next, match the strike to your lock and frame: rim exit devices, cylindrical locksets, and mortise locks each need a different strike body and faceplate, and metal, wood, and aluminum frames take different cutouts. Finally, confirm voltage (12V or 24V, AC or DC) against your power supply or access control panel.
