Door Closers

A door closer does more than shut the door behind people. On a fire-rated opening it is what guarantees the door actually closes and latches. A fire door that stands open protects nothing. On an entry it controls drafts, security, and energy costs. And with the right closer, a heavy commercial door can still meet ADA opening-force requirements.

Key choices: surface-mounted closers (regular arm, parallel arm, or top jamb) are the workhorses and fit most commercial doors, while concealed and overhead closers trade easy maintenance for clean looks. Size the closer to the door. Most quality commercial closers are adjustable across sizes 1 through 6, and bigger, heavier, or windier openings need higher spring sizes. For accessible entrances, look for closers that can be adjusted to ADA opening-force limits, or step up to a low-energy automatic operator with a wave-to-open actuator. Adjustability matters more than people expect: independent sweep speed, latch speed, and backcheck valves are what separate a door that closes reliably and quietly from one that slams.
